Sleaze Debate

I see our MP Fleur Anderson very bravely voted against a sleaze enquiry into the Mandelson affair. Such loyalty to what her constituents think must be rewarded.

What was brave about it?  Anderson was just toeing the Party line just like the 300+ other Labour MPs.  The whole thing was a Labour stitch-up and just an attempt to keep Starmer in power and save their jobs.  Thank goodness most of them will be unemployed after the next GE.

In retrospect it was interesting that the only Labour MPs who voted in favour of a referral to the Privileges Committee were the Corbynite rump who hate Starmer and all later signed the letter for him to step down. I don't think it does Fleur Anderson any discredit not to be in their company.

The attempted referral seems to be a bit of score settling by you Tories over it being done to Boris Johnson. Whereas there was strong evidence of him having flammable lower garments, there was never a very clear case that Starmer was wilfully misleading. The distinction here is Johnson was sleazy but not boring and Starmer is boring and not sleazy.

Hello David,I have avoided listening to the news today as I am truly exasperated with this circus.I understand that there is a minimum number of MPs that need to sign up to the request for Starmer to resign.  However, 96 Labour MPs calling for the PM to resign is not even 24% of the Labour MPs in Parliament.....

David, I was referring to the Labour MPs who joined the Tories in asking for a Privileges Committee referral. The larger number who now want him to go are a mixed bunch who want a variety of different things — the Corbynites want a more left wing government and even Andy Burnham may not suit them and they'll probably end up supporting Angela Rayner. The Streetingites want a more right wing government. The vast majority of Labour MPs recognise that Starmer remains the best option and the time for change is if he looks a dead racing cert to lose the next election in a couple of years time. Even Fleur Anderson, who has reason to dislike Starmer over her ousting from the Northern Ireland office recognises this fact. The psychodrama will resume if Burnham wins the Makerfield election but even then I would assume the lesson of the last few days is that any succession needs to be arranged behind closed doors. Burnham is sensible enough to recognise with the fiscal constraints and uncertain global environment any government is not going to be a good news government and his best option is to bide his time until as close as possible to the next general election.
