Some years ago, working with Putney Society, we reviewed, as far as we were able, the effectiveness of the City Tree; this summarises what we found: In December 2020, Wandsworth Council installed a City Tree near outside the PretoRestaurant with the aim of filtering “particulate matter and fine dust out of the surrounding air, while simultaneously purifying and cooling the air.” But how effective is it in reducing such the highly-affected levels of pollution there? City Trees work by drawing air over panels of living moss, remove polluting fine particles and cool the air. It’s manufactured and marketed by Green City Solutions (GCS) of Bestensee, Germany. As far as we were able to determine, there are no peer research evaluations of the device, the nearest being research commissioned directly by GCS from an independent laboratory, the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS). TROPOS carried out tests in January 2020 to measure the filter effect of the new CityTreemodel CT2020 at distances of 1, 3 and 5 metres; for ultrafine particles (and it’s not entirely clear what size this referred to) These reductions were not especially impressive, either in their size or, especially, in their extent. The Council made the ambitious claim that “residents and visitors to Putney High Streetare benefiting from cleaner air” from the installation of the City Tree. However, the only realistic conclusion to be drawn from the measurements provided by GCS, is that - except in a small area next to the Tree - it is virtually ineffective in reducing pollution overall.
Furthermore, to achieve any realistic lowering of particulate pollution in Putney High Street, many more Trees would need to be installed. It’s not clear what the current cost of each Tree was then, but in 2018 it was £17,600, excluding installation
In other words, the Tree is an expensive irrelevance. It does have a nice seat, though.

An excel-type sheet tick-box for regular watering responsibilities when we are now on our fourth heatwave this year and have had the highest temperatures ever is just never going to work. How many people just walk past when they see plants drooping and do nothing?  Everyone likes to complain but nobody ever wants to take any responsibility and nobody ever wants to pay - they want someone else to.Just about everybody likes nice things but they don't actually want to spend the time and effort to choose carefully and then look after them.It would be good if these were sponsored and then looked after by the community around them BUT have you noticed the parlous state of some of the plants that some supermarkets are selling?  I did actually get around to complaining in a ... Waitrose... once - and they are usually really good and much better at caring for their stock - but that wasn't taken seriously when the Customer Services Manager called someone from the back of the store - and I should have taken it up further.  It was a holiday and there can't have been enough staff on duty - but the plants were outside and dry as a bone and wilting. With your planters in Putney I suggest that you get together and have some sort of public protest and funeral for what you have left there to draw attention to the dire situation - and try and get some local volunteers motivated to keep an eye on them and help with watering in future. It is now the end of the year for many flowering plants and a lot of trees and plants everywhere are suffering because of the lack of rain.  There could still be some long flowering plants around and non-flowering plants eg ivy (brilliant for improving air quality) plants. How about holding a competition in future to try and get some plants suitable for the changeable weather that climate change is bringing us.  It could be a good advert for getting people involved in water collecting and heat tolerant plants.  Of course we may get another Beast from the East also which would cause problems.  Kew Gardens I read has a new carbon garden which I'll visit when I get a chance...Whatever happened to the Positively Putney?  Is it a case of prodding someone or are there some toes that need stepping on?It sounds like you need to call in some guerilla gardeners (and I'm overstretched)!
